today my wife told me that i spend so much effort in organising events for my riding fraternity and charities and other grassroots stuff, but never on outings for us.... & it hit me like a brick!
i remember being lost once many years back, as i tried to identify my life goals & what my hobbies were. i was into all kinds of sports then, including golf, but remember itching for any chance to place a wager even more. holidays or breaks for me must include a round trip to the local casino floor. even when i accompanied daphne on business trips, i would find excuses to ensure i could gamble. i enjoyed the weekend cruises to nowhere and even took time off work on weekdays, board a ferry which took me to the Leisure Cruise which was on international waters. I had no hobbies... i am /was a gambler.
it was not until i was asked to join a motorcycle club SCMCBC, (streetcoyotes.blogspot.com) that i found what i was looking for. and when i took over as president of the club a year later, i realised that i could move mountains if i really wanted to. it was about that time, that i decided to leave my chushy regional job to drive my own business, as i believed i could make a difference in my life. i had a HD sitting at home, but could hardly ride it as i was overseas every so often. riding and running a club & business also led me to volunteer in other organisations, namely the HOG, a registered society of harley owners, and teck ghee rc, a residents committee to contribute back to society, by starting from home. as i had my own business, i thought i could easily juggle my time to attend meetings and events which for me were very rewarding at times.amidst all these volunteer work, i also realised my passion for touring on bikes and it peaked when i rode to phuket in Apr 2006. i finally knew what my hobby was...and am driven by passion to induldge in this sport of motorcycling.
on the path to richness, i am also now running 2 jobs, DBS as a newbie in the wealth management arena, and the more challenging investment in the events business, which is still in its infant stages with the new team and partner on board. to top it all off, business development has never been better, with opportunities to make some real money with old and new friends. honestly, i am busy, tired, sleepy, almost drained and it has been a very very tough 2007.
and on the home front, no matter how hard i try, it never seems to be enough. parenting is tough, but it is harder when you are distracted by society.
so i realise now that all this has got to change. my wife feels left out , neglected , insignificant & my son needs me perhaps now more than ever again. i know now what needs to be done, and what i must do. i have been superboy, superboss, superchief and trying hard to be superdad all in one qtr...but what i need to be is supersweet to my superwife. daphne has been my rock , my pillar , my strength throughout these 5 years and has stuck by me when i decided to switch careers twice! she endured the lonely nights when i was entertaining in some high class nightclub in some remote SEA country, when changi airport was my busstop. she stayed up at nights when i had to work weekends to run events, she sat with me when my staff left me, and assured me its for the best. she let me live my passion and must have been worried sick as i rode for 24 hours to phuket and back in the rain! in uni, she smiled with me as i broke the bank in NZ and cried with me as i gambled it all away as soon as i had it. when i returned to singapore, she got me out of my depression by placing a downpayment for my convertible! when i had a windfall, she let me spend it all on a HD too! she has brought me to places i would have never dreamed of visiting, from Nepal, The SILK route and Cambodia to the many destinations in Europe. but most of all, shes been there for me the last 19 years as my best friend, my soulmate, and my true companion even though i have been, for most of my life, an egoistic, self-centered little boy. Superboy needs to grow up...
So i write this post as a promise to my friends and especially to my wife, that i will focus more time, energy and resources on the family and especially my dearest daphne. (by now, she is imune to the many empty promises i have made but i do mean it la!) this could mean me stepping down from my executive positions in the volunteer groups, remove myself as MD of Threesixty but for starters, i will make this upcoming trip to KL the first and final riding tour for the year. Instead i will save some mula and plan a fancy trip to hokaido in 2008 for her and jonah, so that she wont feel the guilt of leaving him behind. i will also spend more time resting at home, but still work smart for our future. i will think longer and harder before i make decisions and involve my superwife every step of the way. eventhough i have always known but never shown her before, she will see that she is the most important person in my life and will always be. i will grow, i will be SuperGlenn :)
so there, my gift to my wife as we celebrate our 5th anniversary this friday. i have planned an evening out and hope she enjoys it. I will do less for me and others and more for her and jonah, so pray for me that i will be able to prove to her, just how very much i appreciate her for who she is, and how very much i love her so. THANK YOU baby for being there for me, i am always here for you too!
your SuperGlenn.
